Head of the Nanaksar Sect, Baba Lakha Singh Ji, on Tuesday met Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann in Chandigarh and welcomed the state government’s passage of the Jaagat Jot Sri Guru Granth Sahib Satkar (Amendment) Act, 2026, saying the legislation would address the sentiments of the Sikh community and help curb incidents of Beadbi.
During the meeting, Baba Lakha Singh Ji presented a Siropa to the Chief Minister as a mark of honour and respect for his service to humanity and the Sikh Panth. Mann expressed gratitude for the spiritual leader’s blessings and said safeguarding the honour, sanctity and maryada of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji was the foremost duty of the state government.
Baba Lakha Singh Ji described the legislation as a significant step towards protecting the sanctity of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji, stating that repeated incidents of desecration had deeply hurt the Sikh community.
“The passing of the Jaagat Jot Sri Guru Granth Sahib Satkar Amendment Act, 2026, is a path-breaking initiative which has assuaged the sentiments of the entire Sikh community, which was deeply hurt by repeated incidents of desecration. This legislation reflects the commitment of the Punjab Government towards protecting the honour and sanctity of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji,” he said.
He added that strengthening the law against Beadbi would help uphold the sanctity of Shabad Guru and build greater confidence within the Sikh community that such incidents would be dealt with firmly.
Thanking Baba Lakha Singh Ji for his blessings, Chief Minister Mann said the government was committed to following the path shown by the Gurus for Punjab’s progress and the prosperity of its people. He also emphasised the importance of maintaining peace, amity and communal harmony in the state.
Mann said Waheguru had given him the opportunity to serve humanity through the enactment of the legislation, which provides for harsher punishment for incidents of Beadbi. He expressed hope that the law would act as a deterrent against such offences.
“I am nobody to claim that I have passed this Act. This service has been taken from me by Guru Sahib, who is omnipotent and omnipresent. God takes such service from the person chosen by Him, and I consider myself a humble servant of Guru Sahib who has been assigned this task,” the Chief Minister said.
He further stated that Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji held a place akin to that of a father for every Sikh, making it the government’s responsibility to protect its sanctity.
“If the State Government cannot ensure the honour and sanctity of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji, then no one else will fall in line. We are therefore duty-bound to take every possible step to protect the sanctity of Shabad Guru Sahib,” Mann said.
The Chief Minister reiterated that his government would continue working to strengthen peace and harmony in Punjab while upholding the teachings of the Gurus and Peers.
In a message sharing details of the meeting, Mann said Baba Lakha Singh Ji had appreciated the Jaagat Jot Satkar Act, 2026 and blessed him by presenting a Siropa. He expressed gratitude to the Nanaksar Sect head and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to protecting the honour and maryada of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji.
