Hours ahead of Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s visit to Punjab, the state police have dismantled three drug trafficking and illegal arms supply networks in Amritsar, arresting five accused and recovering 13 pistols, 3.267 kg of heroin and 22 cartridges, Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav said on Wednesday.
Yadav said preliminary investigations had revealed that the accused were allegedly involved in supplying illegal weapons and narcotics. Further investigation is underway to establish the networks’ backward and forward linkages and identify other people involved, including handlers based abroad, he added.
A day earlier, Amritsar Rural Police had dismantled another arms and narcotics supply network with the arrest of three people—a woman, her husband and her brother. Police recovered 10.030 kg of heroin, two sophisticated assault rifles, including an AK-47 and an AK-56, along with three magazines and 10 cartridges from their possession.
Shah is scheduled to visit Jalandhar at around 2 p.m. on Wednesday to address the concluding programme of the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) ‘Nasha Mukt Punjab Yatra’, a statewide campaign against drug abuse that has covered all 117 Assembly constituencies.
The event is expected to be a major political mobilisation by the BJP ahead of the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections. The campaign has focused on raising awareness about drug abuse and mobilising public support for a drug-free Punjab.
Punjab BJP President Kewal Singh Dhillon said Shah’s arrival would symbolise “new hope, renewed trust, and resolve” for the state. He said the event would amplify the people’s voice and advance efforts towards building a safe, prosperous and strong Punjab.
Alleging that the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government had failed to curb the drug menace, Dhillon claimed that heroin home delivery had become widespread during its tenure. He said the BJP would take responsibility for addressing the crisis.
Dhillon said the BJP’s statewide campaign had covered all 117 Assembly constituencies, bringing people together around a shared resolve to tackle drug abuse. During its nearly 4,000-km journey, the campaign carried messages of public awareness and collective action to villages and homes.
