Apple on Wednesday announced the launch of Apple Pay in India, making the digital payment service available to users of iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch, with support for Mac expected soon.
Initially, customers with Visa and Mastercard credit cards issued by Axis Bank can add their eligible cards to Apple Pay and use them at thousands of in-store and online merchants across India, as well as at locations that accept NFC transactions, the company said in a statement.
“India is home to a dynamic and digitally savvy population that continues to embrace a cashless future while expecting the highest standards of security and privacy, and we’re so excited to bring Apple Pay to users in India today,” said Jennifer Bailey, Apple’s Vice President of Apple Pay and Apple Wallet.
The launch allows customers to make payments in stores, apps and on websites without repeatedly entering card details, PINs or one-time passwords (OTPs) at checkout. Users can make contactless payments by tapping their Apple devices at compatible payment terminals, without needing an additional app.
Apple said Apple Pay is designed to protect users’ payment information. When a card is added, its actual number is not stored on the device or Apple’s servers, and is not shared with merchants.

Instead, a unique Device Account Number is assigned to the card, encrypted and securely stored in the device’s Secure Element, a certified chip designed to safeguard payment information.
The company said it does not retain transaction information that can be linked to individual users, adding that transactions remain between the user, merchant and the bank or card issuer.
In case an iPhone is lost or stolen, users can access the Find My app to locate the device, lock it or suspend payments from it.
Customers can add eligible cards to Apple Wallet directly through the latest version of the Axis Bank app. Alternatively, they can open the Wallet app on their iPhone, tap the plus sign and follow the instructions to add a card. Once added, the card can be used with Apple Pay, the company said.
Amitabh Chaudhry, Managing Director and CEO of Axis Bank, said the introduction of Apple Pay advances the bank’s ambition to offer greater choice and flexibility to its credit card customers, with support for both Mastercard and Visa networks.
“As India’s digital economy accelerates and consumers seek seamless and secure payment experiences, the introduction of Apple Pay for our Axis Bank-issued Mastercard credit card holders ushers in a new era of contactless commerce, giving Indian consumers greater confidence and peace of mind with every transaction,” said Gautam Aggarwal, Mastercard’s President of India and South Asia.
Suresh Sethi, Visa’s Group Country Manager for India and South Asia, said the launch marked an important milestone in the evolution of India’s digital payments journey.
Apple said customers using Apple Pay will continue to receive the rewards and benefits associated with their cards. At launch, the service will be accepted by millions of merchants across India, including Apple Store locations.
Apple Pay is available in more than 90 countries and regions and works with over 11,000 banking and network partners worldwide.
