The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Tuesday accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of promoting a culture of hooliganism after an FIR was registered against AAP leaders Saurabh Bhardwaj, Jarnail Singh, Sahib Singh and party workers in connection with the alleged assault of a Delhi Police head constable during AAP national convenor Arvind Kejriwal’s visit to Tilak Nagar.
Speaking to IANS, AAP National Media In-charge Anurag Dhanda alleged that the FIR against Jarnail Singh was politically motivated, while no similar action had been taken against Delhi Minister Parvesh Verma over an incident in which he allegedly slapped a young man.
“This is the India of Bharatiya Janata Party’s thuggery—a nation where they want to spread hooliganism everywhere. They have filed an FIR against Jarnail Singh—the very person who exposed corruption,” Dhanda said.
“However, no FIR has been filed against the ‘goonda’ Minister who openly slapped a 22-year-old on the street, despite the incident being caught on camera,” he alleged.
A day earlier, Verma had allegedly slapped a youth during an inspection of a newly constructed road in the area. The incident took place in the presence of AAP MLA Jarnail Singh.
Dhanda said the AAP had staged protests and sit-ins demanding that an FIR be registered against the Cabinet Minister, but alleged that the party’s demands had not been addressed.
He accused the BJP of encouraging a culture of intimidation and alleged that the incident involving Verma reflected a broader pattern of behaviour by BJP leaders.
“People should look into their neighbourhoods. You will surely find some BJP goon—a minister, an MLA, or a councillor who is similarly steeped in arrogance. They go around slapping the public, issuing threats, engaging in corruption and hooliganism,” Dhanda said.
He further alleged that the BJP had established such a system across the country and claimed that people would eventually protest against it.
AAP leader Saurabh Bhardwaj also criticised the BJP over the incidents, alleging that the issue extended beyond Verma to the conduct of party leaders more broadly.
“This isn’t just about Parvesh Verma. This is about the leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party and their culture,” Bhardwaj told IANS.
He alleged that some BJP leaders were intimidating, threatening and assaulting people to prevent them from questioning their actions or raising allegations of corruption.
“Why? So that no one can ask them any questions. So that no one can point a finger at their corruption; they want to silence everyone, but we will not remain silent,” Bhardwaj said.
The AAP leaders’ remarks followed the registration of the FIR against party leaders and workers over the alleged assault of a police head constable during Kejriwal’s visit to Tilak Nagar.
