The INDIA bloc has announced a series of nationwide protests against what it describes as electoral irregularities and the Election Commission’s partisan approach, including district-level marches, demonstrations outside the poll body’s office and a major rally in Delhi on November 1.
Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge unveiled the Opposition alliance’s protest roadmap on Wednesday, outlining plans to raise concerns over the electoral process and mobilise public support on the issue of alleged “vote chori”.
Kharge said “Save Democracy Marches” would be held in every district from October 2 to 8, with demonstrations planned outside District Magistrate offices to inform people about what the Opposition alleges are irregularities in elections.
He said all Opposition MPs would march to the Election Commission on October 6. In the second week of October, INDIA bloc leaders would also seek an appointment with President Droupadi Murmu to submit a representation detailing their concerns over the electoral process and alleged attempts to weaken the Opposition.
The alliance has also planned five rallies across the country in October and November, with dates yet to be finalised. Kharge said the rallies would focus on the alleged denial of voting rights and the impact of electoral irregularities on citizens.
A major rally is scheduled to take place in Delhi on November 1, where the Opposition plans to highlight its allegations of “vote chori” involving the Election Commission.
Kharge further said INDIA bloc leaders would appeal to the Supreme Court to expedite pending cases related to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and other alleged electoral malpractices.
Targeting the Centre, Kharge accused the government of undermining democratic rights, drawing a comparison between demonetisation, which he referred to as “notebandi”, and what he called “vote bandi”. He also cited Rahul Gandhi and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee as leaders who had raised concerns over alleged electoral irregularities.
The INDIA bloc says its planned campaign aims to bring these concerns before the public and press for accountability from the Election Commission.
