Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge on Saturday paid tribute to former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh on his birth anniversary, recalling his contribution to India’s economic growth, nation-building and public service.
In a post on X, Kharge described Manmohan Singh as a visionary statesman whose landmark economic reforms transformed India’s growth trajectory, created new opportunities and helped lift millions out of poverty.
He also recalled Singh’s humility, integrity and wisdom, saying his public life was marked by quiet dignity and compassion, with inclusive growth and the welfare of vulnerable sections at the centre of governance.
Kharge said the rights-based framework associated with Singh’s government remained an enduring part of that vision.
“On his birth anniversary, we pay our heartfelt homage to a statesman whose legacy of honest public service, inclusive development and transformative reforms will continue to inspire generations,” Kharge said.
Karnataka Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar also remembered the former Prime Minister, describing him as a scholar, economist and statesman who served the country with humility, integrity and a deep sense of duty.
Shivakumar said Singh believed economic growth should go hand in hand with equity, opportunity and dignity for every citizen.
He also recalled Singh’s contribution to Bengaluru and Karnataka, referring to his remarks during the foundation stone ceremony of the Bengaluru Metro, when he stressed the need to work for Bengaluru’s development alongside Karnataka’s progress.
The Congress party also paid homage to Singh, recalling his contribution to India’s economic progress and development and describing humility, integrity and commitment to public service as defining features of his career.
Singh, who served as Finance Minister in 1991, was associated with the economic reforms that brought major changes to the Indian economy. He later served as Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014.
During his tenure as Prime Minister, programmes and legislation including the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme, the Right to Information Act and the Right to Education Act were implemented.
Congress leaders on Saturday remembered Singh’s contributions to economic development, social welfare and public service as they paid tribute to him on his birth anniversary.
