Punjab Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema has approved the creation of 110 new Junior Resident (JR) posts at Dr. B.R. Ambedkar State Institute of Medical Sciences (AIMS), SAS Nagar (Mohali), increasing the total sanctioned strength from 97 to 207.
Cheema said the move would strengthen medical education and public healthcare infrastructure in Punjab and support the state government’s efforts to develop Punjab as a premier healthcare and medical education hub.
He said AIMS Mohali has received affiliation consents from Baba Farid University of Health Sciences (BFUHS) and the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) across 24 departments. With the expansion, the annual postgraduate intake at the institute has increased to 69 seats, requiring a working capacity of 207 postgraduate/Junior Resident doctors over the standard three-year academic cycle.
“At present, Dr BR Ambedkar State Institute of Medical Sciences has 97 sanctioned Junior Resident posts. With an annual intake of 38 academic residents, the existing strength stands at 114 over the three-year training cycle,” Cheema said.
He said the projected requirement would increase to 147 Junior Residents for the 2026-27 academic session, 177 for 2027-28 and 207 for 2028-29.
“To bridge the immediate shortfall and successfully cater to the requirement of 147 seats for the ongoing academic year 2026–27, our government has approved the immediate creation of these crucial posts,” he said.
Cheema also pointed out that seven regular/post-diploma Junior Residents are scheduled to complete their tenure and be relieved during the current academic session, with six completing their tenure in October 2026 and one in December 2026.
He said the additional posts were therefore essential to ensure continuity of clinical services and patient care at the institute.
The Finance Minister said the proposal submitted by the Department of Medical Education and Research had been approved to ensure that Punjab’s premier state-run medical institutions have adequate specialised human resources, training facilities and healthcare services for the public.
