Rima Jain, daughter of legendary actor-filmmaker Raj Kapoor and aunt of actor Ranbir Kapoor, has recalled the origins of the Kapoor family’s long-standing Ganpati celebrations and their association with the iconic RK Studios.
Rima shared the memories during a conversation with her cousin and actor Jatin Prithviraj Kapoor, recalling how the tradition of bringing Ganpati Bappa home began in the family’s Chembur residence and later became an integral part of celebrations at the Kapoor home and RK Studios.
According to Rima, the tradition began around the time her brother Rishi Kapoor, fondly known as Chintu, was born.
“Ganpati ji’s tradition started from her house in Chembur, in our house and in our family. Krishna aunty started it when Chintu was being born. When Chintu, Rishi Kapoor, was born,” Rima recalled.
She said the celebrations at RK Studios and the Kapoor residence also began around the same time.
“And simultaneously, celebrations at RK and Home started. And then from there, we kids grew up,” she said.
Rima further recalled how the tradition continued as Rishi Kapoor grew older. When her elder sister got married, she decided to take Ganpati Bappa with her to Delhi, where the idol was kept for 10 days.
“When Chintu grew up, my elder sister said, if I get married, I will take him to Delhi. So, for 10 days, she took Ganpati Bappa to Delhi,” Rima said.
She added that after Rishi Kapoor moved from Chembur, the celebrations continued at his new home, where Ganpati Bappa was brought for five days.
Rima also shared a personal memory from her own marriage, saying she had promised Ganpati Bappa that she would bring the idol to her home after getting married.
“When I got married, I also told Ganpati Baba, ‘Baba, when I get married, I will take you to my house.’ So, he came to my house,” she recalled.
Reflecting on the family’s longstanding spiritual connection, Rima said Ganpati celebrations had remained closely associated with the Kapoor family, RK Studios, Chembur and Raj Kapoor.
“Ganpati ji’s grace is always with us. We can never forget RK, Ganpati. We can never forget Chembur, Ganpati, Krishna aunty, Raj Kapoor,” she said.
The conversation concluded with the traditional chant, “Ganpati Baba Morya.”
The Kapoor family’s Ganpati celebrations at their home and the iconic RK Studios had, over the years, become widely known for their grandeur and hospitality.
