The Goods and Services Tax (GST) Intelligence department has detected alleged tax evasion of more than Rs 60 crore following a raid on a tobacco and gutka manufacturing unit in Bhopal, officials said.
The factory, located in New Chouksey Nagar in the Nawabganj area, was allegedly being operated without proper authorisation, with machinery concealed on the premises, according to officials.
The unit was reportedly owned and operated by Suresh Singh and was manufacturing tobacco products under the brand name “Guru”.
During the operation, GST Intelligence officials found material that allegedly indicated large-scale tax evasion. Singh was arrested in connection with the case and subsequently sent to jail, according to available information.
Investigators are examining the factory’s manufacturing activities, machinery, financial records and other documents to determine the extent of the alleged violations and establish whether other people were involved.
The alleged concealment of machinery has emerged as a key aspect of the investigation. Officials are examining whether manufacturing was being carried out without the required registration and documentation and whether applicable taxes were being evaded.
The raid forms part of the GST department’s enforcement efforts to identify businesses suspected of tax evasion and unauthorised manufacturing. Tobacco and gutka units are subject to taxation and other regulatory requirements, making compliance a key area of enforcement.
