The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognisance of a media report alleging that a woman in Rajasthan’s Banswara district was beaten with sticks and paraded semi-nude after her hair was forcibly cut by her husband and other relatives.
According to the report, the incident allegedly took place on September 1, 2026, after the woman was accused of leaving her home with another man. The matter came to light after a video of the alleged incident surfaced on social media. The NHRC said the reported treatment, if true, raises serious concerns over violations of the woman’s rights to life and dignity.
The Commission has issued notices to the Chief Secretary of the Rajasthan government and the Superintendent of Police, Banswara, seeking detailed reports within two weeks. The reports are expected to include the status of the investigation and details of compensation, if any, provided to the victim.
The NHRC said the woman was reportedly subjected to cruelty and inhuman treatment in public by her husband and other relatives.
The NHRC is a statutory body established under the Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993, with a mandate to promote and protect rights relating to life, liberty, equality and dignity. It can take suo motu cognisance of alleged human rights violations based on media reports and other information available to it.
