Actor Abhay Verma, who plays Flying Officer Rajpal Singh Dhaliwal in Netflix’s Operation Safed Sagar, has voiced support for military conscription in India, saying it could help citizens better understand the country and their responsibilities towards it.
Speaking after the release of the series, Verma said he believed compulsory military service should be considered not merely as a means of military training but as a way for people to gain a deeper understanding of India.
“I think so. Not for any other reason but to understand the country that you live in. And, it’s our right to understand that. It’s not a necessity just to become something or like a lesson that you have to learn but as a responsibility,” he said.
Verma spoke about India’s diverse geography, agricultural resources, languages, cultures and traditions, saying that travelling across the country can help people appreciate its diversity.
“I really cannot tell you how blessed we are to be a part of this country. So just for that reason, and nothing else, the conscription should be enforced,” he added.
Operation Safed Sagar, which premiered on Netflix on August 7, 2026, is a six-episode military drama inspired by the Indian Air Force’s role in the 1999 Kargil War. Verma portrays Flying Officer R.S. Dhaliwal, known as “Dhali”, alongside Siddharth and Jimmy Shergill.
The series focuses on the Golden Arrows squadron and its high-altitude operations during the Kargil conflict. Netflix describes it as a story inspired by one of the Indian Air Force’s significant wartime operations and based on real events.
Verma had earlier said that learning about the real-life operation while preparing for the role gave him a greater sense of gratitude and humility.
Operation Safed Sagar is currently streaming on Netflix.
