Kolkata Police volunteers will wear newly designed saffron-coloured uniforms during this year’s Durga Puja festivities, with the police headquarters at Lalbazar preparing outfits for 20,000 volunteers.
A Lalbazar official said the uniforms have been designed to enable volunteers to perform their duties comfortably for extended periods. The Kolkata Police has allocated Rs 89 lakh for the uniforms and caps.
Volunteers are recruited by the police ahead of Durga Puja to assist with crowd management, traffic regulation and maintenance of law and order at puja venues. They work alongside police personnel, Home Guards and civic volunteers, with duties continuing until Vijayadashami.
The volunteers include school and college students as well as members of the National Cadet Corps (NCC) and local clubs. After Mahalaya, they are trained in their respective police divisions before being deployed.
This year, Lalbazar has designed two variants of the saffron uniform — 12,000 dark-saffron and 8,000 light-saffron outfits. The full-sleeved, collared uniforms will carry the Kolkata Police logo in white on the front, along with the words “Kolkata Police Volunteer” in smaller letters on the front and larger lettering on the back.
The volunteers will also be provided orange caps.
Of the Rs 89 lakh allocation, Rs 73 lakh has been earmarked for the 20,000 uniforms and Rs 16 lakh for the caps.
According to police sources, some volunteers will be deployed on city roads to assist with traffic management, while others will be stationed at major puja pandals to help monitor the safety and security of visitors.
Durga Puja this year will be celebrated in the third week of October.
