Megastar Amitabh Bachchan has reflected on the art of natural and effortless performance, recalling legendary actors Motilal, Geeta Bali and Savitri as performers who, in his words, “performed, not exactly acted in the true sense”.
Bachchan shared his thoughts in his latest blog, where he contemplated the value of casualness and restraint in communication and performance. He suggested that moments are often better conveyed naturally rather than through overt declarations.
Turning to acting, the veteran actor recalled performers whose work appeared instinctive rather than forced.
“Actors with the natural talent of non performance, when performing are the ones that be loved admired with proven followings… Motilal ji, Geeta Bali, Savitri… are some that come to mind instantly, though there are several others that are brilliant,” Bachchan wrote.
He added that these artistes “performed, not exactly acted in the true sense”, describing them as performers who were loved and admired by audiences.
On the work front, Bachchan is currently hosting Kaun Banega Crorepati, the Hindi adaptation of the international quiz show Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? The format features contestants answering multiple-choice questions, with lifelines available to help them when they are uncertain.
Bachchan was last seen in T. J. Gnanavel’s Vettaiyan. He is also reportedly set to appear as Jatayu in Nitesh Tiwari’s upcoming Ramayana: Part 1, which stars Ranbir Kapoor, Yash, Sai Pallavi and Sunny Deol. He is also working on Nag Ashwin’s Kalki 2898 AD sequel, which features Prabhas and Kamal Haasan.
Motilal Rajvansh was known for films including Devdas and Parakh. He also directed Chhoti Chhoti Baten in 1965, but died before the film’s release.
Savitri, one of the most celebrated actresses of Indian cinema, was popularly known as Mahanati in Telugu and Nadigaiyar Thilagam in Tamil. She was among the highest-paid actresses in South Indian cinema during the 1950s and 1960s and is widely associated with the golden era of Telugu cinema.
Geeta Bali, regarded as one of Hindi cinema’s acclaimed actresses, appeared in more than 75 films during a career spanning over two decades. She began as a child artiste with The Cobbler in 1942 and achieved an early success with Sohag Raat in 1948. She married actor Shammi Kapoor in 1955 and had two children with him, including actor Aditya Raj Kapoor.
