India’s defending champion men’s squash team has been handed the top seed, while the women’s team has been seeded third for the squash competition at the upcoming 20th Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya.
The draws and seedings for the singles, mixed doubles and team events were announced on Thursday. Squash will be held at the Nagoya Kinjo-Futo Arena, with the singles and mixed doubles competitions scheduled from September 23 to 27, followed by the team events from September 28 to October 2.
The Indian men’s team of Abhay Singh, Veer Chotrani, Velavan Senthilkumar and Suraj Chand has been placed in Pool A alongside Korea and China.
The women’s team comprising Anahat Singh, Tanvi Khanna, Joshna Chinappa and Shameena Riaz has been drawn in Pool C with Japan, China and Iran.
In the men’s singles, Abhay Singh is seeded second and will receive a first-round bye. Veer Chotrani is seeded fourth and has also been given a bye. Abhay will be aiming to become India’s first individual squash champion at the Asian Games.
In the women’s singles, Anahat Singh is seeded third and will receive a bye in the opening round, while Tanvi Khanna is seeded seventh and will begin against Korea’s Dami Kim.
The singles competition will also serve as a qualification event for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games, with the winners set to become squash’s first-ever Olympians ahead of the sport’s Olympic debut at LA28.
In mixed doubles, Malaysia’s Aifa Azman and Mohammad Syafiq Kamal are the top seeds, while India’s Velavan Senthilkumar and Joshna Chinappa are seeded third. The other Indian pair of Suraj Kumar Chand and Shameena Riaz is seeded ninth. Both Indian pairs have received opening-round byes and will face each other in the second round.
India enter the Games after a strong campaign at Hangzhou 2023, where the country won five squash medals — two gold, one silver and two bronze.
The men’s team won gold, while India also topped the podium in mixed doubles. Saurav Ghosal secured silver in men’s singles, while the women’s team and mixed team won bronze medals.
Harinder Pal Sandhu, who was part of India’s gold-medal-winning men’s team at Hangzhou, will serve as the coach.
