A building collapsed in south Delhi’s Satya Niketan area on Sunday, with several people feared trapped under the debris, officials said.
The incident occurred near Shiv Mandir in Satya Niketan, in the Moti Bagh area. The Delhi Fire Brigade received information about the collapse at around 1:30 p.m.
At around 1:50 p.m., Station Officer Narender reached the site and reported that the building had collapsed and that some people were trapped beneath the debris. He sought the deployment of senior officers and additional manpower.
Following the alert, an SWT, a Big Fire Tender (BFT), an Officer-in-Charge, Duty Officer Mukesh Verma and Station Officer Manoj were sent to the site.
Delhi Police said a rescue operation was underway and that the exact number of people trapped would be confirmed after the operation progresses.
The incident comes weeks after a similar building collapse in Delhi’s Karol Bagh area claimed one life and left three labourers injured during demolition work.
According to the preliminary inquiry into that incident, the two-storey building on Pyare Lal Road in Regarpura was being demolished by a private contractor engaged by the owners without obtaining the required permission from the concerned agency.
The structure suddenly collapsed during the demolition, trapping labourers at the site. Four workers were injured. Sheikh Shamshad later succumbed to his injuries and his body was shifted to the mortuary at Lady Hardinge Medical College Hospital.
Md Ayub suffered serious injuries, including a head injury and a fracture of the right hand, and was referred to Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital in critical condition. Sheikh Saidul sustained limb injuries and was undergoing treatment at Jeevan Mala Hospital, while Rafik-Ul suffered minor injuries and later returned home.
Police and fire personnel had conducted rescue operations at the Karol Bagh site, while the building owners and contractor were detained for questioning.
