Tamil Nadu BJP president Nainar Nagenthran on Monday urged Chief Minister Vijay to ensure the protection of Hindu religious symbols, practices and places of worship, while stressing that all religious communities should receive equal respect and security.
His appeal came after a vehicle carrying 108 ceremonial “Victory Vels” was reportedly set ablaze near Neithavoyal in Minjur, close to Chennai. The sacred spears were being transported from Siruvapuri to the six abodes of Lord Murugan when unidentified persons allegedly set the vehicle on fire, Nagenthran said.
He added that flags associated with a spiritual political organisation were also destroyed in the blaze. Describing the reported burning of religious objects and flags as distressing, the BJP leader demanded that police identify those responsible and take legal action without delay.
Nagenthran also referred to the reported disappearance of an emerald idol of Lord Murugan, allegedly worth several crore rupees, from an area near Madurantakam in Chengalpattu district. He said the two developments had caused concern among devotees, although his statement did not provide details indicating whether the incidents were connected.
The BJP state president further accused the administration of failing to accord equal respect to Hindu beliefs. Referring to restrictions on lighting lamps at Thiruparankundram, he questioned how religious harmony could be strengthened without an even-handed approach towards different faiths.
Nagenthran alleged that the government was imposing restrictions on Hindu religious practices and accused the administration of selective action in the name of secularism.
He warned that repeated attacks on Hindu symbols and alleged curbs on religious expression could have serious consequences, saying failure to act firmly against those responsible could embolden anti-social elements.
Calling on Chief Minister Vijay to ensure adequate protection for Hindu places of worship, religious objects and traditions, Nagenthran said genuine secular governance required every religious community in Tamil Nadu to receive equal treatment, respect and security.
