The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Monday conducted search operations at the Kolkata office of Urdu newspaper Akhbar-e-Mashriq, owned by Trinamool Congress Rajya Sabha member Nadimul Haque, as part of a financial investigation.
According to sources familiar with the operation, simultaneous searches were carried out at seven locations in Kolkata, Delhi and Ranchi linked to Haque and the media organisation. The locations included the newspaper’s main office at Park Circus in central Kolkata, Haque’s residence on Darga Road in south Kolkata and the residence of his son-in-law.
The ED has not officially disclosed details of the case. However, preliminary information indicated that the searches were linked to suspected irregular financial transactions through bank accounts associated with the media entity.
Sources said investigators had allegedly detected discrepancies in the organisation’s accounts and were examining whether the transactions indicated possible money laundering.
The agency is also expected to question Haque, his family members and other directors of the media organisation in connection with the probe.
ED officials arrived at the Park Circus office in the morning accompanied by personnel from the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF). While a team entered the premises, other CAPF personnel cordoned off the office. The main entrance was reportedly locked during the search to restrict movement in and out of the premises.
The searches were continuing and could extend for several hours, sources said.
Akhbar-e-Mashriq publishes editions from several cities, including Delhi, Ranchi, Asansol, Siliguri, Bhopal, Lucknow and Srinagar.
Haque has been a Trinamool Congress member of the Rajya Sabha since April 2012. The latest searches come as the ED examines alleged financial irregularities involving the newspaper’s accounts.
