BRS Leaders K.T. Rama Rao, Harish Rao Detained Amid Ruckus at Telangana Assembly Entrance

Hyderabad, September 7, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) leaders K.T. Rama Rao, T. Harish Rao and several other party legislators were detained by police on Monday after a confrontation at the main entrance of the Telangana Assembly on the opening day of the Monsoon Session.

The BRS legislators had gathered wearing black T-shirts carrying slogans protesting what they described as the Telangana government’s failure to fulfil promises made during the 2023 Assembly elections. Police stopped the MLAs and MLCs, telling them they did not have permission to enter the Assembly wearing T-shirts.

The objection led to a heated exchange between the legislators and police, which escalated into a scuffle. The BRS alleged that K.T. Rama Rao, Jagadish Reddy and Sunitha Reddy sustained minor injuries during the police action.

Harish Rao, the former minister and BRS Deputy Leader in the Assembly, fell during the scuffle. MLA Sunitha Reddy broke down and alleged that police personnel handled her roughly, tore her saree and humiliated her.

The BRS also alleged that former minister Sabitha Indra Reddy was manhandled and that police personnel pulled her hair. Amid the commotion, Jagadish Reddy reportedly fell unconscious.

K.T. Rama Rao and Harish Rao removed their T-shirts and continued their protest in vests. Police personnel subsequently lifted the protesting legislators and took them away. The BRS alleged that Harish Rao was subjected to rough treatment and that police behaved rudely with K.T. Rama Rao and forced him into a vehicle.

BRS MLAs Talasani Srinivas Yadav, Sabitha Indra Reddy, Sunitha Reddy, Kova Lakshmi and Madhavaram Krishna Rao staged a sit-in inside the Assembly gate, protesting what they called the police’s high-handed action against their colleagues.

K.T. Rama Rao questioned why BRS legislators were prevented from wearing black T-shirts when Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi had worn one in Parliament during a protest. He said the party was only questioning the government over its failure to implement promises made during the 2023 elections.

The BRS accused the Revanth Reddy government of resorting to arrests and physical action out of fear of facing questions from the Opposition. The party later announced statewide protests against the action taken against its legislators.

Earlier, BRS legislators had assembled at the Telangana Martyrs’ Memorial at Gun Park before marching towards the Assembly. Rama Rao alleged that the government had betrayed all sections of society by failing to implement its electoral commitments. He claimed the government had failed to fulfil any of the 420 promises, six guarantees and 13 declarations made during the 2023 elections.

Rama Rao, Harish Rao and other BRS leaders later reached the party headquarters.
