A day after a five-storey building collapse in South Delhi’s Satya Niketan claimed seven lives, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Monday ordered the suspension of five MCD officials and vowed strict action against anyone found responsible for negligence.
The suspended officials include South Zone Deputy Commissioner Rakesh Kumar, Superintending Engineer Ranvir Singh, Executive Engineer Lalit Kumar Goel, Assistant Engineer Sunil Chauhan and Junior Engineer Ashish Kumar.
In a post on X, Gupta said the MCD Deputy Commissioner, Executive Engineer, Superintending Engineer, Assistant Engineer and Junior Engineer had been suspended with immediate effect following the tragedy.
The Chief Minister also directed the civic agency to launch a citywide drive to seal buildings having unauthorised fifth floors.
“The building owner has been arrested. Immediate sealing of buildings with unauthorised fifth floors has been ordered across Delhi,” Gupta said.
She added that nearby PGs and buildings would also be thoroughly inspected and that strict action, including sealing, would follow in cases of violations.
“Delhi Government has taken the matter with utmost seriousness. Anyone found guilty or responsible will not be spared,” she said.
The action came after the owner of the collapsed building, Hariram Bansal, was arrested by Delhi Police in Rajasthan’s Bhiwadi. Police had earlier issued a Look Out Circular against him and formed 10 teams to trace and apprehend him.
Gupta revisited the collapse site on Monday morning to review the rescue and related operations. She assured that officials found guilty of negligence or oversight would face strict action.
Seven people have so far been confirmed dead, while several others are undergoing treatment and many are still feared trapped under the debris. Rescue operations continued through the night.
The building, known as “Hostel Daze”, was being used as a boys’ PG and housed several students when it collapsed at around 1.30 p.m. on Sunday, police said. An adjacent building also collapsed, according to eyewitnesses, raising further concerns over the structural safety of buildings in the area.
Meanwhile, students affiliated with SFI and KYS staged a protest and took out a march at Delhi University’s North Campus on Monday. They demanded proper hostel facilities for all university students and raised concerns over the Satya Niketan collapse.
