Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) supremo Mayawati on Monday expressed concern over the loss of lives in the collapse of a five-storey PG hostel in South Delhi, deaths allegedly linked to spurious liquor in Madhya Pradesh’s Sagar district, and the destruction caused by floods in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.
In a post on X, Mayawati described the incidents as “extremely sad and worrying” and said they reflected shortcomings in the functioning of government and administration.
“The collapse of a five-story PG hostel in South Delhi, resulting in the deaths of five people, and the deaths of 18 people yesterday in Sagar district of Madhya Pradesh after consuming poisonous liquor, and the subsequent hospitalisation of approximately 190 sick people for treatment, and the destruction of life and property due to floods in states like Uttar Pradesh and Bihar are extremely sad and worrying,” she said.
Mayawati called for greater vigilance in matters concerning public welfare and urged governments to take strict action against what she described as negligence, indifference and corruption among officials.
The Delhi building collapse toll has since risen to at least six. Delhi Police have issued a Look-Out Circular against owner Hariram Bansal and registered an FIR against him and others. Police said the five-storey structure, being used as a boys’ PG called ‘Hostel Daze’, collapsed while renovation work was allegedly underway in the basement. An adjacent building also collapsed, according to eyewitnesses.
In Madhya Pradesh, 84 people were undergoing treatment after allegedly consuming spurious liquor in Sagar district, officials said. Of them, 59 were admitted to Bundelkhand Medical College, 17 to the district hospital and seven to Banda Civil Hospital. The incident in Banda tehsil has reportedly left around a dozen people dead.
Meanwhile, floodwaters from the Ganga and its tributaries, including the Punpun and Dardha rivers, continued to affect Patna and adjoining areas. Heavy rainfall in catchment areas of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh has aggravated the situation, with authorities continuing relief and rescue operations amid rising water levels.
