Chandigarh, September 7, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

Punjab Vidhan Sabha Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan on Monday urged the state’s youth to actively participate in sports, saying an active sporting culture can help ensure holistic development, promote healthy lifestyles and restore Punjab’s sporting glory.

Highlighting the Punjab Government’s flagship sports initiative, Sandhwan said ‘Khedan Watan Punjab Diyan’ was being organised to encourage greater participation in sports and help the state regain its position on the sporting map.

“Our government is organizing ‘Khedan Watan Punjab Diyan’ as a catalyst to restore the glory of the state in sports. Through this initiative, the youth of Punjab will get motivated towards sports, leading to maximum participation,” he said.

The Speaker said the event provides a platform to identify, nurture and develop sporting talent from villages, towns and cities across Punjab. He said it offers promising athletes an opportunity to progress and compete at the international level.

Sandhwan stressed that sports are essential for both physical fitness and mental well-being. He said regular participation in sports keeps people active and mentally alert while contributing to a healthier and longer life.

He also highlighted the values that sports instil in young people, including resilience, discipline, perseverance and the determination to overcome challenges. Success, he said, comes through continuous hard work and sustained effort, qualities that can help athletes compete successfully on global platforms and win medals for the country.

Reiterating the state government’s commitment to sports development and players’ welfare, Sandhwan said sustained efforts were being made to strengthen the sporting ecosystem in Punjab. He added that a positive change was visible, with young people showing renewed interest in sports.

“If we want to transform our state into a vibrant, colourful ‘Rangla Punjab’, our youth must embrace sports, compete internationally, and bring laurels for the nation,” he said.

Sandhwan further said sports can act as a strong shield against social evils, particularly drug abuse. He urged young people to adopt an active lifestyle and stay away from drugs to lead healthy, peaceful and purposeful lives.
