A potential controversy is looming over the presentation ceremony of the ACC Women’s Asia Cup 2026, with Asian Cricket Council (ACC) President Mohsin Naqvi reportedly set to attend the final in Dubai and present the trophy to the winners.
According to a report by Pakistan-based sports channel Geo Super, Naqvi is expected to travel to Dubai for the September 13 final and serve as the chief guest at the closing ceremony.
Naqvi, who is also Pakistan’s Federal Minister for Interior and Narcotics Control, was at the centre of a controversy during last year’s Men’s Asia Cup final, when India defeated Pakistan in Dubai.
The Indian team had indicated that it was willing to receive the trophy from Emirates Cricket Board Vice-Chairman Khalid Al Zarooni. However, Naqvi reportedly did not accept the proposal. When he later came onto the presentation dais, the Indian players made it clear that they would not receive the trophy from him. The trophy was subsequently removed from the venue, leaving India without it during the presentation ceremony.
India’s Harmanpreet Kaur-led side has emerged as one of the strongest contenders for the Women’s Asia Cup title after qualifying for the semifinals unbeaten.
India secured its semifinal berth with a dominant seven-wicket victory over Pakistan, bowling the opponents out for just 55 before completing the chase comfortably.
If India lift the trophy on September 13, the presentation could once again attract attention, particularly given the events surrounding last year’s men’s final. The Indian team’s response to a trophy presentation involving Naqvi will therefore be closely watched.
