Stones were pelted at the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Vande Bharat Express near Utran station in Surat on Tuesday evening while Uttar Pradesh Governor and former Gujarat Chief Minister Anandiben Patel was travelling on the train. The incident damaged window panes of two coaches, but Patel remained unharmed.
The incident involving Train No. 22961 took place between Utran and Kosad at around 6.30 p.m. to 6.45 p.m., while the train was travelling towards Ahmedabad after departing from Mumbai. The window panes of coaches C-6 and C-10 were damaged in the stone-pelting.
Western Railway officials said VIP passengers, including Patel, were travelling in an Executive Coach and no passenger was injured.
Following the incident, Railway Protection Force personnel reached the area and detained a man from near the railway tracks. Preliminary questioning indicated that he was allegedly intoxicated. Officials are questioning him to establish his identity, determine the circumstances behind the incident and ascertain whether he was responsible for the stone-pelting.
Police and railway authorities are also investigating whether anyone else was involved. The motive behind the incident has not yet been established.
Patel had boarded the Vande Bharat at Vapi after attending an event organised by the Union Territory administration in Daman. She is currently in Gujarat during a 10-day leave from August 17 to 26.
The governor had attended the Monsoon Festival-2026 at Devka Beach in Daman on August 23, where she called for greater awareness among children and young people about the harmful effects of substance abuse.
