India captain Shubman Gill has identified qualification for the 2027 World Test Championship (WTC) final as the team’s primary objective as India prepare to face Sri Lanka in the opening Test at Galle International Cricket Stadium on Saturday.
The Test, scheduled to begin on India’s Independence Day, will be India’s 600th in the format and the 50th match at the historic Galle venue.
India currently occupy fifth place in the WTC standings and are likely to need six or seven victories from their remaining nine Tests to have a strong chance of reaching the final at The Oval in June 2027.
“I think the main goal is to play the World Test Championship final, which is next year. We have got about nine Tests, and I think we have to win around six or seven to have a good chance of qualifying,” Gill told reporters on the eve of the Test.
He said the Sri Lanka series was therefore particularly important and praised the team’s preparation ahead of the tour.
Unlike some previous overseas campaigns, India arrived in Sri Lanka early and played a warm-up match against Sri Lanka Cricket XI in Colombo, allowing the players additional time to adjust to the conditions.
“Most of the players in this team require a bit of time to be able to adjust to the conditions. The extra time in preparation definitely helps,” Gill said.
With Jasprit Bumrah unavailable, Gill backed India’s pace resources to step up. He singled out Prasidh Krishna, saying the pacer had recently been bowling at the best level he had seen from him.
Gill also praised Gurnoor Brar for his ability to generate bounce with an older ball and said Bumrah’s absence presented an opportunity for other bowlers to make an impact.
He stressed the need for India’s bowlers to remain adaptable at Galle, particularly if the pitch offers limited assistance.
“You have to keep trying different things to be able to take wickets. You have to create opportunities, especially on day 1 and day 2,” he said, adding that creative field placements would be important in maintaining pressure.
Gill also backed left-handed batter Devdutt Padikkal, who had previously performed well for India A in Sri Lanka, and highlighted the role of wind at open venues such as Galle.
He said batters would need to assess whether the wind was working in their favour when taking on spinners, noting that this was one of the tactical differences between playing in Sri Lanka and India.
