Actor Ishwak Singh, known for his work in Rocket Boys and Paatal Lok, has stressed the need for dialogue, debate and mutual respect in a diverse society, saying differences in ideas and perspectives should strengthen rather than divide the nation.
Speaking on the occasion of India’s 80th Independence Day, Singh said preserving the culture of open discussion and collective responsibility was essential for nation building.
“We need to remain a society that debates, engages in dialogue and supports one another despite our differences. Our diversity of ideas, cultures and perspectives is our strength. If we can work together towards the greater good while respecting our differences, that is what will make our nation stronger,” he said.
Singh said his portrayal in Rocket Boys gave him an opportunity to revisit the formative years of independent India and engage with the ideas of some of its leading figures.
“I remember Gandhi’s ideas on social justice, Nehru’s emphasis on scientific temper, and Ambedkar’s powerful speeches on equality. Reading them while preparing for Rocket Boys helped me understand my character, but also inspired me personally. Gandhi’s idea of truth force has become one of my core beliefs,” he said.
For Singh, independence extends beyond political freedom. He believes it also means having the ability to learn, think independently and stand up for one’s convictions.
“To me, true independence means having the freedom to educate yourself, engage with others, think independently and stand up for what you believe in,” he said.
The actor also emphasised that freedom must be accompanied by responsibility towards society, particularly those who are less fortunate.
India is celebrating its 80th Independence Day on Saturday, marking eight decades since the country attained freedom from British rule in 1947. Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the nation from the Red Fort, outlining his vision of a self-reliant and developed India by 2047.
