Bollywood actor Sunny Deol has revealed that he once dreamed of becoming a professional Formula 1 racing driver but could not pursue the ambition because of his father Dharmendra’s protective nature.
Sunny made the revelation during his appearance on the quiz-based reality show ‘Kaun Banega Crorepati’. Host Amitabh Bachchan asked the actor about reports of his interest in racing and whether he had wanted to become a Formula 1 driver.
Recalling his childhood passion for driving, Sunny said he had been interested in several sporting activities but was often not allowed to pursue them because his father was particularly protective.
“Yes, I had a passion for such things. I was particularly passionate about driving. But as you know, in our house, whenever we wanted to pursue sports or anything like that, because of father’s protective nature… we didn’t get permission. So that dream just remained incomplete,” Sunny said.
Sunny appeared on the episode alongside his ‘Batwara 1947’ co-stars Aamir Khan and Preity Zinta.
Although his ambition of pursuing a career in racing remained unfulfilled, Sunny went on to establish himself as one of Hindi cinema’s most prominent action stars, while also delivering performances in content-driven films.
He made his acting debut with ‘Betaab’ in 1983 and subsequently featured in films including ‘Arjun’, ‘Tridev’, ‘Ghayal’, ‘Damini’, ‘Ghatak: Lethal’, ‘Border’, ‘Ziddi’ and ‘Indian’.
His performance as a lawyer in ‘Damini’ and the iconic courtroom dialogue “Tarikh pe tarikh” became among the most memorable moments of his career. He later delivered another defining performance as Tara Singh in ‘Gadar: Ek Prem Katha’, with the character becoming a major cultural phenomenon.
Sunny’s other notable films include ‘Jeet’, ‘Darr’, ‘Yeh Dillagi’, ‘Apne’, ‘Singh Saab The Great’ and ‘Chup Chup Ke’.
