Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday paid tribute to the freedom fighters of the Quit India Movement, saying their courage, sacrifice and determination continue to inspire generations of Indians.
Remembering the participants of the August Revolution, Modi said the movement, launched under Mahatma Gandhi’s leadership, injected fresh momentum into the freedom struggle and reflected the people’s resolve to end British rule.
“Remembering all those who participated in the historic Quit India Movement. Their courage will always remain an inspiration for every Indian,” Modi said in a post on X. He added that Gandhi’s call for Quit India infused new energy into the movement and demonstrated the country’s unwavering determination to break free from colonial rule.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah also paid homage to the freedom fighters, recalling the movement’s role in bringing Indians together and instilling the spirit of “Do or Die” in the struggle against British rule.

Shah said the occasion should inspire citizens to place national interests above all else, promote indigenous practices, contribute towards an Atmanirbhar Bharat and work towards building a Viksit Bharat.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath also remembered the freedom fighters on the anniversary, praising their courage, sacrifice and martyrdom.
He said the “Do or Die” call awakened national consciousness and gave a decisive direction to the freedom movement. Their dedication and message of self-respect, he added, would remain an enduring source of inspiration.
The Quit India Movement was launched on August 8, 1942, after the All India Congress Committee adopted the Quit India resolution in Bombay. Gandhi subsequently gave the historic “Do or Die” call, demanding an end to British rule.
The movement led to widespread protests, strikes and acts of resistance across the country despite a major crackdown by the British authorities. It emerged as one of the defining mass movements during the final phase of India’s struggle for independence.
