Trinamool Congress general secretary and Lok Sabha MP Abhishek Banerjee has once again approached the Supreme Court seeking permission to travel abroad for ophthalmic treatment, days after the Calcutta High Court rejected his plea.
This is the second time the Diamond Harbour MP has moved the apex court in connection with his request for overseas medical treatment.
Banerjee had initially approached the Calcutta High Court last month. During a hearing on July 20, a single-judge bench of Justice Sougata Bhattacharya advised him to consult specialists at the state-run S.S.K.M. Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata.
The court had said it would consider his request for foreign travel after receiving the medical opinion from the S.S.K.M. specialists.
Banerjee subsequently approached the Supreme Court instead. A three-judge bench comprising Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, Justice Joymalya Bagchi and Justice Venkata Subramaniam Mohan referred the matter back to the Calcutta High Court.
The case came up again before Justice Bhattacharya on August 5. Banerjee’s counsel informed the court that the MP would not undergo the suggested consultation at S.S.K.M. Following this submission, the High Court denied permission for overseas travel and dismissed the petition.
Banerjee has now filed a fresh petition before the Supreme Court. The date for hearing has not yet been announced.
The West Bengal Police administration has reportedly opposed his foreign travel, citing several FIRs registered against him, including cases involving non-bailable sections.
Banerjee sustained serious eye injuries in an accident in October 2016 while returning to Kolkata from a political programme in Murshidabad district. He subsequently underwent treatment at several hospitals in India and later sought medical care abroad.
