The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) staged a protest at Delhi University on Friday during the second phase of voting for the Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) elections, alleging that the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) had attempted to manipulate the polling process.
ABVP supporters climbed onto police barricades outside the Law Centre and raised slogans against the NSUI as voting was underway.
ABVP National General Secretary Virendra Singh Solanki alleged that an attempt had been made to cast votes using fake identity cards. He claimed that a woman was caught inside the polling area and admitted to being associated with the NSUI.
“This protest is being held because NSUI attempted to rig the election here,” Solanki told IANS, alleging that more than 100 people had entered using similar means. He demanded that those allegedly involved be identified and cases registered before voting resumed.
Solanki further alleged that fake voting slips carrying the ABVP’s name along with an NSUI ballot number had been distributed. He claimed that an alleged NSUI worker involved in distributing the slips was caught and handed over to police.
He also attributed the alleged incidents to what he described as NSUI’s response to the support received by ABVP during the first phase of voting.
DUSU President Aryan Maan, who is associated with the ABVP, also accused NSUI of using fake identity cards and photographs to facilitate voting. He said voting at Law Centre-1 should not resume until the concerns raised over the polling process at Law Centre-2 were addressed.
The allegations by ABVP could not be independently verified from the material available.
The DUSU President also welcomed the Delhi High Court’s order prohibiting candidates, students, supporters and others from taking out victory processions after the election results are declared. The court has warned that violations could invite criminal and administrative action and may also amount to contempt of court.
Maan said that even if ABVP wins, it would not hold a victory procession in compliance with the court’s order. Voting for the DUSU elections is being held across Delhi University, with counting scheduled for September 19.
