Actress Asha Negi has responded to Rohit Roy’s controversial “dustbin medium” remark about television, saying she cannot comment on the actor’s intentions or what may have led him to make the statement.
Rohit, in a recent interview, had described television as a “dustbin medium” and said film stars possess a certain level of “style and class” that television actors lack.
Asked about his comments, Asha told IANS that she did not know what prompted the statement.
“I don’t know what the intention was behind it, what people go through… What type of frustration they have experienced? I cannot comment on what he said,” she said.
Asha, however, spoke positively about her own association with television and credited the medium with giving her recognition and a lasting connection with audiences.
“For me personally, television has given me everything. I became a household name because of television, and till today people still call me Purvi, my character name from Pavitra Rishta,” she said.
Asha rose to popularity with Pavitra Rishta, which starred Ankita Lokhande and the late Sushant Singh Rajput. She said she remains grateful to television for the opportunities and recognition it has provided her.
“So, if they remember till now, it is because of television, and that medium is… I will always be grateful to television for giving me what I have today. I don’t think OTT or cinema would be able to give me what TV has given me,” she added.
Asha is currently part of Ali Baba Aur 40 Bhoot, an upcoming horror-comedy series that combines elements of folklore, supernatural mystery and adventure.
The show stars Asha Negi as Ali and Vishal Vashishtha as Baba. Set against the backdrop of Central Indian folklore, the series follows Alisha “Ali” Nigam, a science-driven neuropsychology expert whose search for her missing father leads her into a world of supernatural mysteries.
The 40-episode series premiered on JioHotstar on September 11.
