The Gauhati High Court has directed Assam University Vice-Chancellor Rajive Mohan Pant to vacate his post over alleged violations of University Grants Commission (UGC) regulations in his appointment.
According to an official, the court issued the direction on October 14, raising questions about whether the eligibility criteria and prescribed procedures for appointing the head of the central university were followed.
The appointment has reportedly been challenged on the grounds that it did not comply with the applicable UGC norms. The controversy has also brought the appointment process for senior positions in central universities under scrutiny.
University Registrar Pradosh Kiran Nath said the matter had been communicated to the authorities in New Delhi. The university is awaiting a response from the Centre before deciding on its next course of action.
The court also raised the issue of recovering the salary already paid to Pant in connection with the alleged irregularities. However, the precise implications of the order, including any recovery of salary and the administrative steps to follow, remain subject to further clarification and proceedings.
The development highlights the importance of compliance with UGC regulations governing appointments to senior academic and administrative positions in higher education institutions.
Assam University is a central university headquartered in Silchar and serves students from Assam and other parts of the Northeast. Any change in its top leadership could affect the institution’s administration and ongoing academic activities.
Further clarity is expected after the university and the concerned central authorities respond to the court’s direction.
