Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati on Saturday accused sections of the media and social media of running a campaign of fake and misleading opinion polls to undermine her party ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections in Punjab, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand .
In a post on X, the former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister alleged that caste-based prejudice and the misuse of financial power were being used to influence public perception of the BSP through what she described as sponsored surveys.
Mayawati said the party was intensifying its grassroots preparations for the elections, including the selection of strong candidates, but was already facing what she termed a malicious campaign designed to divert attention from its efforts.
She alleged that sections of the media had repeatedly circulated false narratives about the BSP during elections, portraying it as electorally weak through what she called fake and sponsored polls.
Recalling the 2007 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, Mayawati said the BSP had secured a full majority despite predictions and expectations to the contrary. She said her party’s government had subsequently focused on the rule of law, justice and public welfare, describing its tenure as a new constitutional era.
The BSP chief also appealed to people dissatisfied with the BJP government currently in power in Uttar Pradesh and the previous Samajwadi Party (SP) government to remain alert to what she described as opposition tactics and malicious propaganda.
She urged members of the “Bahujan Samaj” and other sections of society to guard against misinformation and remain committed to the BSP’s electoral campaign.
Mayawati called on party supporters to work towards forming a BSP government for the fifth time under her leadership, saying this would ensure the welfare and security of all sections of society.
Her remarks come as political parties step up preparations for the upcoming Assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Punjab. The BSP is seeking to strengthen its grassroots organisation ahead of the contests.
