Chennai, October 17, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)
Airfares from Chennai have climbed sharply ahead of the Ayudha Puja and Vijayadashami holidays, increasing travel costs for passengers heading to their hometowns and tourist destinations during the extended festive break.
Ayudha Puja falls on October 19 and Vijayadashami on October 20, giving many travellers a four-day break when combined with the adjoining weekend. The holiday period has triggered a rush out of Chennai, putting pressure on air, rail and bus services.
Flight tickets have become considerably more expensive on several domestic routes, including Chennai–Thoothukudi, Chennai–Coimbatore and Chennai–Salem. Passengers travelling to other southern destinations, such as Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi, Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Vijayawada, are also facing higher fares.
The increase extends to major metropolitan centres, with flights from Chennai to Mumbai, Delhi and Kolkata also witnessing steep prices amid heightened demand.
The surge is adding to the expenses of people planning festive visits with family or using the consecutive holidays for short trips. Travellers are facing higher costs across both shorter regional routes and longer domestic journeys.
The rush is not limited to air travel. Trains and buses departing Chennai are also seeing heavy crowds as residents leave the city ahead of the celebrations.
The concentration of festive visits and leisure travel within a short window has intensified demand across transport services. For passengers who opt for flights amid crowded trains and buses, the higher fares have made holiday travel more expensive.
With the holiday period approaching, travellers departing Chennai are contending with both crowded transport services and rising airfares.
