Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday extended birthday greetings to Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, wishing him a long and healthy life.
In a post on X, Modi wrote, “Birthday greetings to Punjab Chief Minister Shri Bhagwant Mann Ji. Praying for his long and healthy life.”
Born in 1973 in Satoj village in Sangrur district, Mann comes from a family of schoolteachers. He graduated in Commerce from Shaheed Udham Singh Government College in 1992 and began attracting public attention during his college years through comedy performances and audio recordings.
Mann rose to prominence through television shows such as Jugnu Kehnda Hai and Jugnu Mast Mast. His popularity grew further after he competed in The Great Indian Laughter Challenge on Star Plus in 2008. He also appeared in the National Award-winning film Main Maa Punjab Dee.
After establishing himself as a comedian and satirist, Mann entered politics through the People’s Party of Punjab, founded by Manpreet Singh Badal. He contested his first Assembly election in 2012 from Lehra constituency in Sangrur district but lost to former Chief Minister Rajinder Kaur Bhattal.
Following the merger of the People’s Party of Punjab with the Congress, Mann joined the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) at the invitation of its national convener, Arvind Kejriwal.
In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, Mann won the Sangrur parliamentary seat, defeating senior Akali leader Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa. He retained the seat in the 2019 general election, becoming AAP’s sole Member of Parliament from Punjab.
Mann resigned as AAP’s Punjab president in 2018 after Kejriwal apologised to Akali leader Bikram Singh Majithia in a defamation case. Mann, who had frequently criticised Majithia, was reappointed to the state post the following year.
In the 2022 Punjab Assembly elections, Mann won from Dhuri constituency by a margin of more than 58,000 votes. He was sworn in as Chief Minister on March 16, 2022.
