New Delhi, October 17, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

Left-wing women’s organisations staged a protest outside the Delhi Police Headquarters on Saturday, accusing the police of harassing women journalists and demonstrators detained during recent protests in the national capital. The protesters demanded an end to what they described as intimidation and police excesses.

A large number of women activists and representatives of various organisations gathered outside the headquarters, raising slogans against the alleged police action and questioning the detention of women participating in ongoing demonstrations.

The protesters also renewed their demand for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over the controversy surrounding the revision of electoral rolls and allegations that some people had been left out of the lists.

Representatives of the Student Federation of India (SFI), All India Mahila Samskritik Sanghatan (AIMSS) and Krantikari Yuva Sangathan (KYS), among other groups, took part in the demonstration. They called on the police to ensure that women journalists and activists could exercise their democratic rights without fear of intimidation or harassment.

The protesters alleged that several women journalists and demonstrators had been detained during recent protests in Delhi. They said the alleged incidents raised concerns about the treatment of women participating in public demonstrations.

One activist accused police personnel of inappropriate physical contact with women protesters during recent demonstrations and demanded an end to such conduct.

Another protester said the police action should not prevent citizens from demonstrating against the Election Commission of India (ECI), describing the right to protest as a democratic right.

“The women of this country will not tolerate this kind of harassment for simply demanding their rights,” another activist said, adding that the organisations would continue to raise their concerns.

The demonstrators also expressed concern over the reported detention of All India Students’ Association (AISA) president Neha Bora, claiming she had been kept at a police station for several hours late on Saturday.

The protesters called on the Delhi Police to ensure that women participating in demonstrations were treated in accordance with the law and that their rights were respected.

The allegations against the police were raised by the protesting groups; no response from the Delhi Police was included in the account.
