Five locations in the national capital received bomb threats on Friday, a day before India celebrates its 80th Independence Day, prompting the Delhi Fire Service (DFS) to deploy fire tenders to the sites.
According to DFS officials, the locations named in the threats were Jamnagar House, Jhandewalan Flatted Factory Complex, the District Magistrate’s Office in Saket, Terminal 3 of Indira Gandhi International Airport and the SDM Office at Delhi Cantonment.
Fire tenders were dispatched to all five locations. Officials said no suspicious object had been found during the checks conducted so far.
The threats come amid heightened security arrangements in Delhi ahead of Independence Day celebrations, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi scheduled to address the nation from the ramparts of the Red Fort on Saturday.
Earlier, an email sent to the Delhi Mayor’s Office on August 3 had threatened multiple bomb blasts at the Red Fort on August 15. The communication prompted the Mayor’s Office to alert the Delhi Police and other security agencies.
Following the alert, police personnel, bomb disposal squads and other security teams carried out an extensive sanitisation and inspection of the Red Fort and surrounding areas. Security was subsequently strengthened and an investigation launched, according to officials.
The latest threats also come weeks after a separate bomb threat targeting the Red Fort triggered a major security operation on July 11.
According to Delhi Police, that threat originated from a call made to the Mumbai Police Control Room, with the caller allegedly claiming that the historic monument would be blown up. Mumbai Police subsequently informed the Delhi Police Control Room, following which the North District Police initiated security measures.
After a comprehensive search of the area, police found no suspicious object or explosive material and determined that the threat was a hoax.
With the Independence Day event expected to draw large crowds, extensive security arrangements and movement restrictions are in place across the capital.
