Actress Pratibha Ranta, who plays freedom fighter Pratibha Lahiri in the series ‘The Revolutionaries’, has opened up about her character and the research that helped her understand the young revolutionary.
Ranta spoke to IANS alongside Nikkhil Advani, Bhuvan Bam, Rohit Saraf and Gurfateh Pirzada during the promotions of the series in Mumbai.
Speaking about Pratibha Lahiri, Ranta said there is limited information about the freedom fighter in the public domain. She recalled discussions with director Nikkhil Advani about Lahiri’s connection to Chandrashekhar Azad and the younger generation of revolutionaries.
According to Ranta, when Chandrashekhar Azad was surrounded by the British and had one bullet left in his gun, he shot himself rather than allow the British to capture him. She said Lahiri later rubbed his ashes on the foreheads of young revolutionaries.
Reflecting on what that revealed about Lahiri, Ranta said she imagined her as someone who understood the importance of passing the message of sacrifice to the next generation.
The actress said she viewed Lahiri as a “curious cat” who wanted to understand everything happening around her.
“She was a very avid reader. She was very interested in studies,” Ranta said, adding that Lahiri was also highly intelligent and sharp.
Ranta further said that Lahiri was involved in decoding letters exchanged with revolutionary Sachindra Nath Sanyal.
“She would solve the coded letters. And it was just absolutely amazing,” she added.
‘The Revolutionaries’ follows four freedom fighters — Rash Behari Bose, Pratibha Lahiri, Sachindra Nath Sanyal and Bagha Jatin — who fought against British rule. Inspired by true events, the series is set against the backdrop of India’s freedom struggle.
The show stars Rohit Saraf, Pratibha Ranta, Gurfateh Pirzada and Jason Shah, among others.
It explores the lives of revolutionaries who believed that armed resistance was essential to ending British rule in India. The series also highlights the sustained revolutionary activities that, according to its narrative, contributed to the British Empire shifting its capital from Kolkata to Delhi.
