Yoga guru Baba Ramdev on Wednesday said Indian Muslims should recognise Lord Ram and Lord Krishna as their ancestors, while asserting that Muslims in India are converts.
Speaking to IANS in response to AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi’s remarks on the political representation of Muslims, Ramdev said recognising ancestral roots would help strengthen social unity.
“I would urge all my Muslim brothers to recognise that our ancient sages are their ancestors too; Lord Ram and Lord Krishna are their ancestors as well. If Muslims connect with their ancestral roots, they will never feel weak,” he said.
Ramdev added, “This is because every Muslim in India is a convert. If Hindus and Muslims live together in unity, they will become strong themselves, and the country will also grow stronger.”
His remarks came after Owaisi said that political parties in India did not want Muslims to have an independent political agency and alleged that the community had been reduced to a vote bank.
Ramdev’s comments are similar to remarks made earlier this year by BJP Minority Morcha national president Jamal Siddiqui, who said that Muslims who did not believe in Ram and Krishna could not be called Muslims and described Indian Muslims as descendants of Lord Ram. Uttar Pradesh Minister Anand Swaroop Shukla had also made similar remarks in 2021, referring to Ram, Krishna and Shiva as ancestors of Indian Muslims.
Ramdev also commented on Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy’s recent remarks contrasting Lord Shiva and Lord Ram. Reddy had said that Shiva represented the poor while Ram represented the rich, in the context of his criticism of the BJP’s use of the “Jai Shri Ram” slogan.
Ramdev rejected the idea of differentiating among Hindu deities on the basis of social or economic categories.
“Sanatan has existed for ages and will continue to do so. Some people previously sowed discord within Sanatan based on caste, class, and community. Now, they claim that Lord Ram is the God of the rich and Lord Shiva is the God of the poor,” he said.
He added that there was no distinction between deities including Ram, Krishna, Hanuman and Shiva and appealed against discrimination in the name of religion.
“I appeal to everyone, do not create confusion and do not discriminate, at least not in the name of God,” Ramdev said.
Reddy’s remarks have drawn criticism from BJP leaders, while Congress leaders have defended his comments as a reference to the political use of religious symbolism.
