President of the Shiromani Akali Dal Punar-Surjit, Giani Harpreet Singh, has appealed to human rights organisations, political parties, social organisations and Sikh Sangats to participate in the Bandi Singh Release March, scheduled to begin from Gurdwara Fatehgarh Sahib on October 2.
The march, being organised at the call of the Qaumi Insaaf Morcha, will commence at 9 am on October 2 and conclude on October 3 at Takht Sri Damdama Sahib in Talwandi Sabo.
Giani Harpreet Singh urged people from all sections of society to join the march in large numbers and raise their voices for the release of Sikh prisoners, commonly referred to as Bandi Singhs, who, according to the organisers, have already served twice the period of imprisonment prescribed for their sentences.
He said the march aims to draw public attention to the continued incarceration of these prisoners and put pressure on governments to address their release demands.
Giani Harpreet Singh said the participants would offer an Ardas (prayer) before Guru Sahib upon reaching Takht Sri Damdama Sahib, seeking the release of the Bandi Singhs.
He expressed concern over what he described as the rigid attitude of governments towards the issue and called upon Punjabis to participate in the march, emphasising that the struggle for human rights had historically been an integral part of Punjab’s tradition.
The appeal comes amid continued demands by various Sikh organisations and groups for the release of Sikh prisoners who, they maintain, have completed the terms applicable to their sentences.
The Bandi Singh Release March is intended to mobilise support for the issue through collective participation by political, social and religious organisations, along with Sikh Sangats.
