India’s ace shuttler PV Sindhu advanced to the women’s singles Round of 16 at the Asian Games on Saturday after defeating Chinese Taipei’s Chiu Pin-chian 21-19, 21-14 in the second round at the Ichinomiya City Municipal Gymnasium.
The two-time Asian Games medallist had to fight back after trailing 10-11 at the break in the opening game. Sindhu saw two game points slip away before converting her third opportunity to take a 1-0 lead.
The Olympic double medallist settled into a better rhythm in the second game and led 11-7 at the interval. She maintained control after the break to close out the match 21-14 and secure a straight-games victory.
Sindhu will face Japan’s Tomoka Miyazaki in the Round of 16 later on Saturday. India’s women’s team had earlier lost to Japan in the quarterfinals of the team event.
Sindhu will also be aiming to add another Asian Games medal after returning without a podium finish from the Hangzhou Games, where she was eliminated in the women’s singles quarterfinals.
Earlier in the day, Unnati Hooda defeated Malaysia’s Wong Ling Ching 21-14, 20-22, 21-19 in the second round and will face Indonesia’s Putri Kusuma Wardani in the Round of 16.
Ayush Shetty also advanced after beating Kazakhstan’s Makhsut Tajibullayev 21-7, 21-7. He will next face Chinese Taipei’s Chou Tien-Chen.
Lakshya Sen, however, was knocked out in the men’s singles second round after losing to Singapore’s Loh Kean Yew 12-21, 21-15, 14-21.
