The body of a 50-year-old Hindu man was recovered from inside a drum floating near a sluice gate in the Begunbari area of Bangladesh’s Mymensingh district, local media reported.
The deceased was identified as Niranjan Chandra Sutradhar, who ran a jointly owned jewellery shop in the Atharbari Building area of Mymensingh.
Police have not yet determined who killed Niranjan or the motive behind the alleged crime, and no arrests had been reported as of Friday, according to The Daily Ittefaq.
Kotwali Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge Muhammad Shibirul Islam said the body bore sharp-weapon injury marks on the head and chest. Police suspect that Niranjan was killed before his body was placed inside the drum and thrown into the water.
A token issued by Mymensingh Hindu Cooperative Credit Union Limited was found in the victim’s trouser pocket. Police contacted the organisation using the token and were able to establish his identity. His wife, Sumita Rani Sutradhar, and son, Joy Sutradhar, later identified the body.
Police reportedly recovered the body on Wednesday morning after local residents spotted the floating drum near the sluice gate and alerted authorities.
The incident comes amid allegations and reports concerning attacks on Hindu minorities in Bangladesh. Earlier this month, the Awami League alleged that incidents involving attacks on temples, homes, land disputes and violence against minority communities were recurring in the country.
The party also cited the reported killing of retired Hindu teacher Ganapati Chakraborty and his family in Rangpur while criticising the government’s response. These claims are political allegations and do not establish responsibility for the Mymensingh killing.
Police are continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding Niranjan’s death.
