Music composer Amaal Mallik believes rock music has already made a strong comeback, more than a decade after the genre’s popularity began giving way to electronic sounds.
Mallik, who has composed ‘Yeh Awarapan’ for the upcoming Emraan Hashmi-starrer ‘Awarapan 2’, spoke to IANS during the film’s promotions and shared his thoughts on the evolution of contemporary music.
The composer said musicians should first concentrate on creating a strong melody before deciding which genre best suits a song.
“I think rock music has already made a comeback. With ‘Yeh Awarapan’, having Arijit Singh croon a rock anthem this year, I think many people will also believe that the genre is back and we should do it,” Mallik said.
Reflecting on the popularity of rock bands during the late 2000s, he said the genre was prominent from the early 2000s through around 2011, before electronic music became increasingly dominant.
Mallik also pointed to his own work in electronic dance music, including tracks such as ‘Suraj Dooba Hai’ and ‘100 Asmaan’, while stressing that melody has always remained central to his approach.
“I have also done a lot of songs like ‘Suraj Dooba Hai’, ‘100 Asmaan’ which were EDM. But never leave the melody quotient. At least for me, in my journey, I have tried to make the sound extravagant, new age, hip-hop, EDM. Your melody should reach the heart,” he said.
He added that even his most upbeat compositions are built around melodies that can stand on their own without elaborate production.
Earlier, Mallik revealed that he deliberately avoided making ‘Yeh Awarapan’ overly dependent on programming. He wanted the musical arrangement to contrast with the emotional depth of the song’s title.
“When the word is so deep, ‘Aawarapan’, it cannot be defined with one thing,” he said, describing the song as a blend of happiness, realisation and introspection.
He added that the lyrics have been written in a conversational yet profound manner, resembling someone sharing the story of their life with a close friend.
“Sometimes it feels like you are telling your story to a friend,” Mallik said.
‘Awarapan 2’ stars Emraan Hashmi and is the sequel to the 2007 romantic action drama ‘Awarapan’.
