The Congress on Friday welcomed Jamia Millia Islamia’s announcement of a timeline for restoring its students’ union, describing the development as a victory for students who had campaigned for the return of their democratic rights after nearly two decades.
The university administration announced the schedule on Thursday. According to an order issued by the Registrar’s Office, the constitution of the Jamia Millia Islamia Students’ Union (JMISU) will be approved and implemented by May 15, 2027. Elections are to be held within approximately six weeks of the start of the next academic session, expected around July 16, 2027.
Congress MP Imran Pratapgarhi congratulated the protesting students and credited their determination and peaceful agitation for the decision. He particularly praised the participation of women students, describing their support as historic.
Pratapgarhi also criticised the university administration over an FIR that reportedly included allegations of trespassing against him. He dismissed the allegations and claimed that the administration had attempted to discredit the students’ protest. He further alleged that slogans cited in the controversy were not written by students but had been put up as part of an effort to undermine the agitation.
Congress leader Udit Raj also congratulated the students, particularly those associated with the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI), saying their struggle had contributed to the administration’s announcement.
CPI(M) MP John Brittas described the decision as an important moment for student democracy, noting that Jamia students had been without an elected union for nearly 20 years. He said the development should encourage students across the country to reclaim democratic space on their campuses.
Brittas also referred to a similar student agitation at Jawaharlal Nehru University, where students had undertaken a hunger strike, and said such movements could inspire wider efforts to restore student representation.
The announcement marks a significant step towards bringing back an elected students’ body at Jamia, though the formal constitution and election process are scheduled for 2027.
