Former Telangana minister and Congress MLA Konda Surekha has expressed regret over personal remarks she made against Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) working president K.T. Rama Rao, popularly known as KTR, in 2024.
Surekha took to ‘X’ on Thursday to issue a clarification regarding the remarks, stating that they were made in the context of the political situation at the time while criticising the Opposition. She maintained that the comments were not intentional.
“I should not have made those baseless remarks. I had absolutely no malicious intent to cause pain to KTR or his family members, nor did I intend to damage their reputation,” she said.
“If my comments caused any hurt to him or his family, I express my regret and hereby withdraw those remarks,” Surekha added.
The former minister was removed from the Telangana Cabinet last month following certain remarks made by her daughter against Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy.
On October 2, 2024, Surekha had made the controversial remarks about KTR, blaming him for the divorce between actors Naga Chaitanya and Samantha.
Popular actor Nagarjuna, Naga Chaitanya’s father, subsequently filed a defamation case against the then minister, alleging that her comments had harmed the dignity and reputation of his family.
In November 2025, Nagarjuna withdrew the defamation case after Surekha expressed regret over her statement. The actor withdrew the case after she clarified on ‘X’ that her remarks were not intended to hurt him or his family members.
KTR had also issued a legal notice demanding that Surekha retract her remarks and apologise. However, she had initially maintained her comments about the BRS leader, following which he initiated defamation proceedings against her.
In December last year, a city court issued a non-bailable warrant against Surekha. After reviewing the preliminary evidence submitted by the complainant, the court observed that prima facie material existed to proceed under Section 356 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), along with the corresponding procedural provisions cited in the case.
