The Doda Foundation, led by film actress Janita Doda, organised a special training programme on environmental protection for government school teachers at Government Polytechnic College, Rupnagar, under its ‘Go Green’ initiative. The programme focused on making reusable bags from old and discarded clothes to reduce plastic pollution and promote sustainable practices.
The initiative aimed to reduce the use of single-use plastic bags, encourage the reuse of old materials and inspire people to become more responsible towards the environment.
The programme was organised under the Environment Education Programme (EEP) in collaboration with the Punjab State Council for Science and Technology, Chandigarh. It is supported by the Government of India’s Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change.
Through the initiative, the Doda Foundation is encouraging people to adopt environment-friendly habits in their daily lives to reduce waste and ensure the responsible use of natural resources.
During the training session, teachers learned how to make strong and useful bags from old clothes. The activity demonstrated how discarded garments can be transformed into practical items through a little effort and creative thinking. This not only promotes the reuse of textiles but also helps reduce dependence on plastic bags and contributes to keeping the environment clean.
Speaking to the media, Doda Foundation president and film actress Janita Doda said plastic pollution had become a serious environmental challenge. Plastic bags and other single-use products can clog drains, pollute soil and water resources, and harm wildlife.
She urged people to avoid unnecessary plastic use, carry cloth bags while shopping and reuse old items instead of throwing them away. She stressed that adopting such simple habits in everyday life could make a meaningful contribution to environmental protection.
Janita Doda said another important objective of the training programme was to take the message of environmental conservation to schools and students through teachers. The participants were encouraged to incorporate practical environment-friendly activities into school education so that students could develop a sense of responsibility towards nature from an early age.
She added that such initiatives help students not only understand environmental issues but also adopt sustainable practices in their daily lives. Activities promoting waste management, reuse and responsible consumption can help develop environmentally conscious citizens.
Emphasising the collective responsibility of environmental protection, Janita Doda said safeguarding nature was not the responsibility of any one individual, institution or government, but a shared duty of every citizen.
She said prioritising cloth bags in households, reusing old clothes and avoiding unnecessary plastic could collectively make a significant difference. Such activities could also promote skill development and create opportunities for self-employment.
The organisers acknowledged the guidance and support of Dr. Navneet Walia, Principal of Government Polytechnic College, Rupnagar; Prem Kumar Mittal, District Education Officer; and Inderjit Singh, Deputy District Education Officer.
Those present at the programme included Sukhjit Singh Kanth, District Environment Coordinator; Kulwant Singh and Vivek Kumar, Environment Block Coordinators; Jaswinder Doda, Founder Trustee of the Doda Foundation; Harshdeep Doda, Trustee; Dr. Rati Arora, Assistant Professor at MCM DAV College; and Simran and Vinod Sharma from the Computer Faculty of Government Polytechnic College, Rupnagar.
