Jamia Millia Islamia has agreed to hold students’ union elections and revoke suspension orders and show-cause notices issued to students during recent protests, following 14 days of demonstrations demanding the restoration of the student body.
In an order issued on Monday, the university said a committee would be constituted to draft the constitution of the Jamia Millia Islamia Students’ Union (JMISU). Elections will be held within 15 days of approval of the constitution, paving the way for the restoration of a student body that was dissolved in 2006.
The administration also announced that suspensions and show-cause notices issued to students during the protest period would be revoked. A separate committee will be formed to investigate the conduct of security staff during the demonstrations.
However, the university’s order also recorded an undertaking by the protesting students to issue a public apology at a press conference for statements, actions or social media posts deemed defamatory towards the administration. The students have also agreed to remove such posts from social media platforms immediately, with compliance to be monitored by the university.
The administration directed that the protest be called off immediately following the issuance of the order.
The decision follows demonstrations that began on October 12, with students demanding the restoration of the JMISU and the removal of the university’s Chief Proctor over what they described as a crackdown on protesters. Several students had also been on hunger strike during the agitation.
The announcement marks a significant development in the standoff between the university administration and the protesting students, with the election process now dependent on the drafting and approval of the union’s constitution.
