New Delhi, October 25, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

England pace legend James Anderson will leave Lancashire at the end of the 2026 season after the county decided not to offer him a new contract, bringing his 25-year association with his boyhood club to a close.

The 44-year-old expressed disappointment over the decision, saying he would have preferred a different ending to his long career with Lancashire.

“I’ve supported Lancashire since I was a kid, and so to get to play for them for 25 years was a dream come true,” Anderson wrote in a social media statement.

Recalling his time at Old Trafford, he added: “I have always found it special walking out to play at Old Trafford and have some incredible memories of doing so, including the honour of being captain — if it was up to me it wouldn’t have ended like this, but I wish the players and fans all the best for the future.”

Lancashire’s incoming director of cricket, Paul Farbrace, and newly appointed chief executive Richard Kenyon informed Anderson of the decision during a meeting on October 19. The club said it was beginning a rebuilding process aimed at securing promotion from Division Two of the County Championship and eventually challenging for the Division One title.

Anderson had hoped to continue playing next season after an impressive 2026 campaign in which he claimed 50 wickets at an average of 17.68 and was named Lancashire’s Championship Player of the Year.

Farbrace paid tribute to the veteran, describing him as the greatest bowler Lancashire and England had produced. He thanked Anderson for his contribution to the club, saying his achievements and influence would leave a lasting legacy.

Anderson’s departure from Lancashire follows the end of his England Test career in 2024, when then head coach Brendon McCullum and captain Ben Stokes decided he was no longer part of their plans.

England’s highest wicket-taker in Test cricket, Anderson claimed 704 wickets in 188 matches. He made his Lancashire debut in 2001 and has taken 443 wickets in 112 first-class appearances for the county, along with 83 wickets in List A cricket and 50 in T20 matches.
