Veteran actor Gajraj Rao has shared a disturbing account of his recent experience with drivers in Jaipur, raising concerns over alleged reckless driving, mobile phone use behind the wheel and disregard for basic road safety measures.
The Badhaai Ho actor revealed in a recent social media post that he had visited the city to shoot for a project and was travelling in new and older-model Toyota Innova cars, which were generally provided by the production house.
According to Rao, several drivers drove at extremely high speeds, as though they were being chased by a dinosaur, while also answering phone calls during the journey. He said his request to one driver to avoid using the phone while driving was met with a bewildered reaction.
Recounting the incident on a photo-sharing platform, Rao described how the driver continued staring at him through the rear-view mirror even after the phone call had ended.
He wrote that the driver had been discussing a wedding function and a family member’s hospital visit while driving. Rao said he advised the driver against talking on the phone, pointing out that they could even be delayed for the shoot.
The actor compared the driver’s reaction to the expression of a contestant who had received the wrong answer during the “Phone-a-Friend” round of the television quiz show Kaun Banega Crorepati, potentially losing the Rs 7-crore prize.
Rao also recounted another exchange during the journey when the driver attempted to reassure him about not wearing a seat belt.
“Yaha to koi nahi lagata sir ji belt velt, darne ki koi baat nahi, kuch nahi hoga apko,” the driver reportedly told him, meaning that nobody wore seat belts there and that he had nothing to fear.
According to Rao, the driver even tried to convince him that wearing a seat belt could attract a fine in the city.
The actor’s account has highlighted concerns about driving practices and compliance with road safety rules, including the use of seat belts and avoiding mobile phone calls while driving.
