The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday described Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s visit to Punjab as a significant step towards tackling drug trafficking, organised crime and what it called “mafia raj” in the state.
BJP Rajya Sabha MP Tarun Chugh said Shah’s visit was intended to stand with families who had lost loved ones while opposing gangsters and drug addiction, adding that Punjab needed to be freed from fear and insecurity.
“Amit Shah’s visit today is a blow to the mafia bosses,” Chugh said, alleging that criminal networks operated from luxurious residences in Chandigarh to facilities inside Punjab’s prisons. He also questioned how interviews with alleged gangsters were being conducted from jails and accused those responsible of glorifying criminals.
Chugh called for an impartial investigation into the roots of organised crime in Punjab. He further criticised the state government’s earlier response to deaths linked to the drug menace and said the demand for a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe had gained momentum.
Delhi Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa also targeted the Punjab government, alleging that pressure from the Centre had prompted it to order a CBI inquiry. He said the investigation should ensure accountability and justice for the affected families, including the Jhota family.
Sirsa further accused the state’s political leadership and senior police officials of providing protection to drug traffickers. These allegations were made by the BJP leaders and were not independently established in the statements provided.
BJP national spokesperson Tuhin Sinha linked Shah’s visit to the party’s stated commitment to eliminating drug trafficking and organised criminal networks across the country. He alleged that the drug mafia had caused widespread damage under the Aam Aadmi Party government in Punjab.
Shah arrived in Punjab on Tuesday to meet the families of three individuals whose deaths have drawn attention to the state’s drug problem.
