The Punjab Vigilance Bureau has arrested Inspector Gulshan Kumar, Station House Officer (SHO) of Dhar Kalan police station in Pathankot district, for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 1 lakh. The amount was reportedly the first instalment of a total bribe of Rs 2.5 lakh demanded to remove a complainant’s name from a police case.
A Vigilance Bureau spokesperson said the arrest followed a complaint lodged by a retired LIC manager from Amritsar. The bureau’s Pathankot unit laid a trap and caught the inspector while he was allegedly accepting the money in the presence of two official witnesses. The tainted currency was recovered.
According to the complaint, a quarrel took place at the complainant’s younger brother’s restaurant, Madhuban, located in village Dhangu Sara in Pathankot district. Both sides reportedly sustained minor injuries in the incident.
An FIR was subsequently registered at Dhar Kalan police station against restaurant worker Krishna and three unidentified persons. The complainant’s name was also mentioned in the case as a suspicious person.
The complainant alleged that Inspector Gulshan Kumar demanded Rs 5 lakh to remove his name from the case. Following negotiations, the alleged bribe amount was reduced to Rs 2.5 lakh, payable in instalments, with Rs 1 lakh fixed as the first payment. The complainant also recorded the conversation concerning the alleged bribe demand.
Unwilling to pay the money, the retired LIC manager approached the Vigilance Bureau’s Amritsar range. Acting on his complaint, the bureau organised the trap that led to the inspector’s arrest.
A case under the Prevention of Corruption Act has been registered against the accused at the Vigilance Bureau police station in Amritsar. Further investigation is underway, the spokesperson said.
